Kingaroy businessman Richard Mason has turned a negative into a positive … creating a barbecue smoker out of his former teller machine which was stolen and “smoked” by thieves last year.

In mid-2017 thieves targeted Richard’s Kingaroy Car and Dog Wash in Rogers Drive on multiple occasions, causing tens of thousands dollars worth of damage.

Amongst the items stolen was an entry teller machine which thieves ripped from the ground, risking electrocution in the process (see photos, below).

The teller was later found dumped beside a burned out, stolen Commodore near Blackbutt.

Richard retrieved the badly damaged unit, which now just a burned out metal box.

After some welding and the addition of a chimney, the teller machine has become the Kingaroy Car and Dog Wash barbecue smoker.

Richard put the smoker through its paces on Friday, serving up smoked pork spare ribs to invited guests at the car wash.

Everyone gave the new device a big thumbs up!

Richard is now the proud owner of probably the world’s most expensive smoker but he plans to put to it good use by entering the Australian Barbecue Championship which will be held in Kingaroy as part of the BaconFest festival in August.

He also has a warning to would-be thieves. His already tight security at the business has been ramped out even further in recent months ….
