Gympie Regional Council has increased its financial support for this year’s Kilkivan Great Horse Ride to $9500, up $3000 from last year.
The decision to increase the support was made at the Council’s January meeting.
This year’s event will move back to its traditional date in April and has been expanded from three days to five, from April 4-8.
This follows a $14,000 grant from the Federal Government under Round 1 of the Building Better Regions Fund.
Weather has been a continual headache for ride organisers, with recent events affected by floods and then droughts.
The 2017 ride was delayed from April to October because of drought and the fire risk but the situation was even worse later in the year with a total fire ban in the area.
Problems caused by this postponment have prompted organisers to say the 2018 ride will either go ahead in April or be cancelled.
