Construction of Cherbourg’s new $15 million wastewater treatment plant has begun.
Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Mark Furner said on Monday the new infrastructure will ensure Cherbourg will have a low-maintenance and long-lasting wastewater solution.
It is replacing a 60-year-old treatment plant.
Stage 1 of the project began with earthworks for a series of ponds on a site away from the township entrance and homes.
Stage 2 will begin next month and will include new pump stations and irrigation systems to provide water source options for agriculture.
The new wastewater treatment plant is expected to be completed by May next year.
Cherbourg Mayor Arnold Murray said the council has been working with the State Government to identify the best sustainable water treatment solutions.
“The start of this project is great news for residents and we’re also ensuring that training is in place for the long-term operation and maintenance of the facilities,” he said.
