A small team of South Burnett U8s and U9s soccer players will be competing on the Gold Coast a little later this month, and they’re looking forward to the challenge.

They’ll be taking part in the Gold Coast Youth Championships Cup at Glennon Park in Nerang, the home of the Gold Coast Suns.

The Youth Championships Cup is an initiative of the Mudgeeraba Soccer Club.

It began in 1996 with the simple goal of offering Mudgeeraba soccer players an opportunity to advance their football skills while developing cultural understanding, respect and friendship through sport.

Over the past 21 years, though, it has steadily grown to become the largest international tournament of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

This month’s visit will be the first time the South Burnett has taken part in the competition.

The young players will be playing eight matches over three days from September 25-28.

Each match will have 30 minute halves (versus 45 minutes for older players) with a 7-minute half time break and will be played strictly to FIFA rules.

The players are all involved in either the Kingaroy, Nanango or Barambah junior soccer clubs, and their trip has been supported by Claas Harvest Centre in Toowoomba.

With this year’s junior soccer season now over, the chance to take part in the Youth Championships is a rare opportunity to compete against players that are completely unknown to them.

Coach Peter Howlett told southburnett.com.au the trip will be an exciting opportunity for the youngsters, and he shares their excitement.
