Nanango State High School’s Year 9 debating team travelled to Kilkivan on Saturday to take part in the junior area final of the Apex Debating Competition.
Danika Deweers, Kaycee Barron and Macey Roberts came up against a top team from Fraser Coast Anglican College.
The topic was “That the cashless debit card will improve the quality of life for families receiving welfare payments”.
Fraser Coast drew the Affirmative case while Nanango State High School argued the Negative position.
South Burnett adjudication chairman John Box represented the South Burnett on the adjudication panel alongside to adjudicators from Fraser Coast Apex.
Emma-Kate Currie, who is the National co-ordinator for the Apex competition, chaired the debate.
“The Fraser Coast team had very polished, confident speakers and delivered a well-prepared team performance,” John said.
“Nanango went very well and used an angle that they agreed with the Opposition in some areas but with a clever twist they argued the card ‘may’ improve the quality of life, not ‘will’ improve the quality of life.
“One adjudicator scored the debate within half a point but on a unanimous and close decision, Fraser Coast Anglican College were declared the winners.”
The Nanango State High School team had earned the right to take part in the final after defeating Kingaroy State High School in a close result at the South Burnett final held in July.
