The South Burnett Regional Council will try to map out a new path to grow the region’s tourism industry, which has been in the doldrums for several years.

The Council announced on Thursday it will hold an all-day workshop soon to discuss future directions for regional tourism promotion.

A Council spokesperson said the aim of the workshop was to foster discussion between Councillors, senior staff, the newly-formed Visit South Burnett local tourism organisation, the South Burnett Directions Tourism Reference Group and other tourism operators.

The move comes after last week’s Budget revelation that revenues at the Council-operated Lake Boondooma and Yallakool tourist parks dropped by $225,000 over the past year.

The shortfall occurred at a time when the Southern Queensland Country regional tourism organisation claimed tourism numbers hit a record high.

“Tourism in the South Burnett is at a crossroads at the moment,” Mayor Keith Campbell said.

“As one of the major tourism operators in the region, it’s imperative Council work with all tourism organisations to assist and support their efforts.

“An expected outcome from this workshop is that we will all work together to sell the South Burnett as a tourist destination, so it’s essential that all operators take this opportunity to have their say.”

The workshop will be held at the Glendon Street council chambers in Kingaroy from 9:00am to 4:00pm on Thursday, July 20.

Interested groups and individuals who’d like to take part will need to RSVP by July 12.

RSVPs should be directed to the Council’s Tourism Officer, Julie Foley, on (07) 4189-9174.
