A man has died and a truck driver taken to hospital after a stationwagon and a semi-trailer collided on the Brisbane Valley Highway near Esk in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The crash split the stationwagon in two and left debris strewn across the highway.

The incident occurred about 3:15am at Hamon Cove, between Fernvale and Esk (near Lake Wivenhoe).

The male driver of the stationwagon died at the scene.

The male truck driver suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Ipswich Hospital.

Traffic on the highway was disrupted for more than 10 hours.

At 12:15pm Thursday, diversions were still in place around the scene via Gatton Esk Road and Coominya Connection Road; the Brisbane Valley Highway was closed in both directions.

The Police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
