If a recent announcement that Murgon will soon install a 40-camera CCTV  network in the town’s CBD has left residents wondering if crime is out of control there, think again.

According to Queensland police data, Kingaroy is actually the town with the most crime in the South Burnett.

In April, Kingaroy saw 75 crimes committed and 44 solved, followed by Murgon 65 (44 solved), Cherbourg 57 (44 solved), Nanango 20 (10 solved) and Wondai 8 (4 solved).

At the other end of the scale, Hivesville, Tingoora and Kumbia were the most crime-free towns in the region, with all three reporting no incidents of crime during the month.

All other South Burnett towns had between 7 and 2 crimes in April.

But how bad is our crime, really?

In Kingaroy, the most common offences were:

  • Theft (excluding unlawful entry) – 16
  • Drugs offences – 15
  • Property damage – 14
  • Traffic offences – 10
  • Good Order offences – 7
  • Assaults – 5
  • Weapons Act offences – 3
  • Unlawful entry – 2
  • Unlawful use of a motor vehicle – 1
  • Handling stolen goods – 1
  • Other – 1

Other towns followed a similar pattern.

All up, 253 crimes were committed in the South Burnett’s main towns and villages during April and 162 – or about 62 per cent – were solved immediately.
