South Burnett Saints’ two teams will be in action this weekend for Round 1 of the 2017 Darling Downs AFL competition.
The Saints’ men will be competing for the first time in the Division 1 competition, the Allied Pickfords Cup.
This follows their strong performance in the combined Division 1 / Division 2 competition last year where they made it through to the semi-finals against more fancied teams.
Other teams in Division 1 are Coolaroo, South Toowoomba, Toowoomba Tigers, University and Goondiwindi.
The Saints’ first outing will be an away game against Toowoomba club Coolaroo to be played at Gold Park in South Toowoomba on Saturday afternoon.
The could be described as a grudge match as Coolaroo was the side that knocked the Saints out of last year’s semi-finals.
The game of the round is expected to be the clash between last year’s grand finalists, South Toowoomba and University Cougars, which will be played at Heritage Oval in Toowoomba on Saturday.
The Saints’ first home game will be played in Kingaroy on May 13 (Round 4).
South Burnett Saints women will also be in action on Saturday, taking on the Dalby Swans at Dalby on Saturday.
There are six teams competing in the Darling Downs women’s competition, including a combined Lockyer Valley / Warwick side.
The Saints’ women will also play their first home game on May 13.
