Nanango’s Ashley Smallwood shakes off a Gayndah tackle … Smallwood has been selected in the Senior aquad

March 31, 2017

The South Burnett Rugby League has announced the squads for 47th Battalion representative duties this year.

Players were picked after a series of recent trial games in front of selectors.

The 2017 senior carnival will be played in Rockhampton from April 28-30, coinciding with the Centenary celebrations of the Rockhampton Rugby League.

Junior 47th Battalion games will be played on May 13, also in Rockhampton.

The 47th Battalion carnival, organised by the Central Division of the QRL,  has been running for more than 50 years and rotates around the Central region.

Last year it was contested in Roma.

Its name honours the 47th Infantry Battalion AIF, known as the “Wide Bay Regiment” because so many of its members were recruited from the local region.

The 47th Battalion served with honour in New Guinea during World War II.

The South Burnett Eagles U18s – the combined Blues / Whites side from last year – are supposed to be in action in the Toowoomba Rugby League competition this week against Highfields.

This is the third round of their extended competition, and they are one-for-one for far.

In Round 1, they were defeated 8-6 in a close match against the Dalby Diehards at Dalby.

They more than made up for it in Round 2, downing Oakey 60-18 at TJ O’Neill Oval in Kingaroy.

NB. Round 3 had been scheduled to be played at Murgon Showgrounds on Sunday at 11:00am, but southburnett.com.au was unable to confirm on Friday if this game was still going ahead at this venue. It would appear to clash with the B Grade Cricket Grand Final which is scheduled to be played at the same ground next Saturday. This final had been postponed from Saturday this week to allow the pitch to repair following the recent rain.
