Former Cherbourg resident Shaleise Law helped to make Queensland sporting history on Sunday when she ran on to the field for the Brisbane Lions in Round 1 of the new AFL Women’s competition.

Law was selected in the forwards for the game against the Melbourne Demons.

The match was played in atrocious conditions at Casey Fields in Cranbourne East, Melbourne.

The players battled through heavy rain and strong winds until lightning finally forced a temporary halt to the game.

In the end, Brisbane proved too strong for the home team.

The Lions won 4.1 (25) to 1.4 (10), leading at every change.

Law learned her AFL skills at St Saviour’s College in Toowoomba.

She went on to play for South Toowoomba and Zillmere before being signed by the Lions.
