The group calling for the restoration of the wooden Jimna Fire Tower say “people power” is now the key to its preservation.
“People power can now save the Heritage-listed Jimna Fire Tower,” Jimna Forest Action Group Inc secretary Dave Wright said.
He said the State Government was calling for letters of support for the future of the 47m tall tower.
The Jimna Fire Tower was built in 1977 and is claimed by supporters to be the tallest man-made wooden fire tower of its type in the southern hemisphere.
It formerly offered 360 degree views over the surrounding forestry areas.
It was closed to tourists in 2006 because of its condition. Earlier this year, Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said it would cost more than $1 million to fix.
But supporters say the tower formerly attracted more than 30,000 tourists a year.
“This Australian icon now needs the general public to put their hand up,” Mr Wright said.
“It will be the last throw of the dice for this unique part of Australian history and heritage.
