Soprano Calista Walters, right, with accompanist Marguerite Genrich

November 2, 2016

Toowoomba-based soprano Calista Walters dropped into Nanango at the weekend for a practice session ahead of her live concert next Saturday, November 5.

It was a pleasant homecoming for Calista, who grew up in Nanango and attended St Patrick’s Catholic School and Nanango State High School.

Amongst the familiar faces to greet her on Saturday was Liz Caffery, who remembers having Calista as one of her students.

Calista left the South Burnett to develop her musical career, studying at the University of NSW and the University of Southern Queensland.

Since her graduation, she has performed with Opera Queensland’s Community Chorus projects in La Bohème (2014), Die Fledermaus (2015), Candide (2015) and Il Barbiere di Siviglia (2016).

The Sacred Music Recital – which will run from 2:00pm on Saturday afternoon at Our Lady Help Of Christians Catholic Church – will include several well-known pieces, including Ave Maria.

And if the rehearsal on Saturday is any indication, the audience will be blown away by Calista’s voice and talent.

The recital is a fundraiser by the Nanango Catholic Parish towards the $70,000 cost to re-paint the interior of the OLHC ahead of its centenary in 2017.

Tickets are available at the Nanango Visitor Information Centre for $15 ($10 students) or at the door on Saturday afternoon.

The Nanango Catholic Parish has also released a limited edition 2017 Centenary Calendar as part of it fundraising activities.

The calendar is packed with historic photos of Nanango and the parish.

The calendar has been organised chronologically down through the decades from pre-1900s to 2010s. Each month features a large historical photograph and several smaller ones from a particular decade.

The photographs include images of the church as well as various priests, religious ceremonies, St Patrick’s class groups with the Sisters of Mercy, and social functions.

Cost is $10. For more information, contact Liz on 0488-631-149.
