The Blackbutt Bakery has come home laden with trophies from the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition, held in Melbourne last week.

Roberta Anson and Jim Roberts picked up a gold medal for Best Game Pie In Australia for their Croc-A-Thai (crocodile meat in a Thai curry sauce), which also took out the overall top award for Australia’s Best Gourmet Pie.

They also took Top 3 Overall placings for Best Red Meat Pie (Jack Ribbs), Best Seafood Pie (Fillet Of Fish), Best Brekkie Pie (Green Eggs and Ham) and Best Vegetarian Pie (Potager).

In the daily judging for this year’s contest, Blackbutt Bakery won 13 gold, four silver and one bronze:

  • Gold: Green Eggs & Ham, Chunky Mushroom, Southwest Chicken, Reuben, Potager, Billy Butt, Butchers Block, Bunyip, Fillet Of Fish, Big Mac, Rodeo, Croc-a-Thai, and Jack’s Ribs.
  • Silver: Mince, Canadian Brekkie, Chubby Chicken, and Stag.
  • Bronze: Dim Sum

Pie makers from across Australia took part in the competition, which is run by the Australian Pie Council.

Judging took place at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre between September 12-15.

Afterwards, Roberta told southburnett.com.au she and Jim were “over the moon” about this year’s results.

Roberta said the competition’s judges come from all over Australia, so the wins provided national acknowledgement Blackbutt Bakery’s pies were amongst the nation’s best.

The bakery has been entering the competition for several years now, she said.

Under the rules, they have to bake the pies under normal shop conditions in Blackbutt, then snap-freeze their entries and send them to be judged in Melbourne.

The first year they entered the competition they’d sent their pies by courier and the delivery had been lost in transit.

So every year since, the couple book extra seats when they fly to Melbourne so they can take their pies with them.
