South Burnett Saints secured a hard-fought win in a topsy-turvy Darling Downs AFL game against Highfields on Saturday.

The Saints got off to a good start, leading the home team by a goal at the end of the first quarter.

The Highfields Lions had the  narrowest of leads at halftime, 4.4 (28) to 4.3 (27), and powered on during the third quarter to lead by 14 points at the change.

But the Saints roared home in the last, shutting downs the Lions’ attack while booting home seven goals of their own.

The final score was South Burnett 14.6 (90) to Highfields 9.9 (63).

Saints’ goals were kicked by Nathan Trace (3), Keegan Wright (3), Keiran Snow (2), Adam Bowater (2), Paul Pressnell, Troy Miller, Kieran Askin and Brad Edwards.

Next Saturday, the Saints will head off to Chinchilla to play the Suns who are yet to record a win in the competition this year.

South Burnett are currently at fourth spot on the ladder, behind South Toowoomba, University Cougars and Coolaroo.

In the women’s competition,  South Burnett had a bye this round;  next Saturday they will play South Toowoomba in Toowoomba.
