Four valuable campdraft horses escaped serious injury when a large horse float ran into a ditch of the side of the D’Aguilar Highway near Yarraman about 8:00am on Saturday.

The incident occurred on the passing lanes just south of the town.

Traffic on the highway was reduced to one lane for about three hours as emergency crews worked to free the trapped horses in the teetering truck.

A tilt tray from Claytons Towing was used to stop the truck from rolling any further while the horses were extricated.

A heavy recovery vehicle then put the truck back on the road.

Police, the fire brigade, QAS and SES were all involved in the operation to ensure the safety of the horses.

The driver of the horse float was not injured.
