Former Murgon Mustang Gavin Cooper with the NRL trophy and a bunch of young Mustangs on Saturday
Murgon businessman Mark Smith – yes, the moustache is growing back – was one of the driving forces behind getting NRL star Gavin Cooper back to Murgon for a visit

NRL star Gavin Cooper was the pride of Murgon on Saturday when he returned to his old home town clutching the (very heavy) NRL Premiership trophy.

Cooper, who played in the second row during the Cowboys’ historic 2015 premiership win, played all his junior rugby league for the Murgon Mustangs.

He brought the trophy along as the centrepiece for a special fun day held at Murgon Showgrounds for junior rugby league fans.

After some fun activities on the football field, Gavin Cooper posed for photos with young (and old) fans.

He was also given a key as a memento of his visit.

A highlight of the day was the presentation of loyalty awards to Murgon juniors who have either three, five or 10 years continuous service with the club.

Receiving awards were:

  • 3 Years – Theo Fewquandie, Dustin Ramke, Jake Sippel, Jacob Hodgson, Charlie Sippel, Parker Alexander and Callie Scott
  • 5 Years – Fletch Prendergast, Lachlan Zelinski, Ivia-May Riddell,  Michael Fisher, Thomas Currin, Joe Mickelo and Cooper Alexander
  • 10 Years – Byron Yesberg, Orlyn Fisher, Karl Berlin, Mitch Wilson and Ozay Fisher

In the evening, Gavin and his family were special guests at a dinner held at the Murgon PCYC Club.

The visit was organised by the Murgon Business and Development Association and the Murgon Rugby League Club, with sponsorship by Moreton Resources.

The Murgon JRL Club presented Gavin Cooper with a commemorative key to mark his visit
