FLASHBACK: Nanango Panthers Kieran Mangan and Kieran Askin hold the First Division Grand Final trophy up for the crowds at Tom Alford Oval, the home of soccer in the South Burnett

March 18, 2016

South Burnett Football have released their draw for this year’s South Burnett soccer competition, and the long road to the Grand Final at Kingaroy’s Tom Alford Oval in late August is now underway.

This year – as in previous years – Nanango’s Panthers, Murgon’s Barambah, and Kingaroy’s Wests and Gunners will all be fielding 1st and 2nd Division men’s teams, along with a women’s side.

This year’s competition began last Saturday, March 12 and will continue over 15 rounds until Saturday, July 30 before three end-of-season play-offs in August.

The President’s Cup will be played after Round 6; and the season will have four breaks for Easter, the Labour Day long weekend, Zone championships in mid-June and school holidays in early July.

The season’s Semi Final will be held at Murgon on Sunday, August 14; the Preliminary Final at Nanango on Saturday, August 20; and the Grand Final at Tom Alford Oval in Kingaroy on Saturday, August 27.

During the season, Saturday afternoon matches will be played at the Nanango Soccer Fields in Burnett Street; Tom Alford Oval at the end of Oliver Bond Street, Kingaroy; the Wondai Soccer Fields on the Bunya Highway, Wondai; and the Murgon Sportsgrounds in Macalister Street, Murgon.

Teams will rotate through all four venues, and two venues will be in operation whenever a round is being played unless a particular match is postponed.

Last year’s Premiers Nanango Panthers still seem the team to beat in the 2016 competition.

The Panthers have won every 1st Division Grand Final since 2012, and will be hoping to make it five in a row this year.

Last week, in their start-of-season clash against Barambah, the Panthers walked away victors 11-2 in 1st Division.

However they only narrowly won their 2nd Division match 1-0, and drew 3-all in the Women’s Division.

This Saturday’s matches will be played in Kingaroy and Wondai.
