Fourteen young touch footballers from Murgon State High School will be heading off to the beach next month to represent Cherbourg.
They’ll be taking part at Bunburra, an indigenous Beach Touch Football Tournament which is being held at Surfers Paradise on March 5.
“Bunburra” is a Yugambeh word meaning “beach”.
The seven girls and boys will be accompanied by team manager Tallara Watson to the event, which is being organised by the PCYC in conjunction with Touch Football Australia.
Some of the best indigenous footballers from across Queensland will be taking part.
Ten regions and 20 teams will be participating.
It is Barry Tapau-Fewquandie’s second year at Bunburra.
Last year, the Cherbourg boys’ team made it through to the final, going down in a nail-biter to Bundaberg 4-3. He’s hoping it can do one better this year and bring home the trophy.
PCYC South Burnett manager Sgt Rod Gelderblom is enthusiastic about the competition.
To earn selection, the players must have a good school attendance record, be active in the community, be responsible and stay out of trouble.
Cr Kathy Duff, who holds the Indigenous portfolio on the South Burnett Regional Council, has contributed $2000 of her discretionary funds to help cover the cost of the two teams’ accommodation and travel.
