As guest speaker, Cr Tessmann was invited to speak about “leadership”.

The former KSHS student said this was the “art of influence over others to achieve a shared goal”.

He said dairy deregulation had sparked his interest in politics. He first stood for Council at the age of 18 but was unsuccessful; he then stood when he was 21 and won.

Cr Tessmann also spoke about two little-known leaders who had inspired him:

  • Sir Charles Adermann, whose vision for a peanut co-operative to assist farmers to market their crop had led to the establishment of the Peanut Company of Australia, and
  • Dr Ellen Kent Hughes, Queensland’s first female councillor who was elected to Kingaroy Shire Council in 1925.

It was also announced that the KSHS Concert Band – which played at the event and is well-known outside the school because of its appearances at public events – would from now on be known as the KSHS Symphonic Band.
