Yarraman’s Heritage House is getting a much-needed facelift, thanks to a grant from Stanwell Corporation.

The front of the building is currently being painted by Peter McDonald and an assistant from Nanango’s McDonald House Painting after the Yarraman Historical Society was successful in a grant application to Stanwell’s corporate sponsorship program.

The wooden front wall is being painted white, while the tiling and guttering are being finished in Heritage Red.

The painting job has required the use of a cherrypicker to reach the uppermost portions of the two-storey facade.

Peter said he hopes to complete the job in a few days, weather permitting.

The building was once the Sacred Heart Convent but is now the home of the Yarraman Historical Society.

It houses the Historical Society’s records, a large museum, and provides the studios for community radio station Wild Horse FM 99.7, as well as a valuable meeting place for community groups.

Outside, the grounds of the former convent play host to a wide range of historic buildings and items from the district which have been preserved by the Society’s volunteers.

Historical Society President Helene Johnson said the building had needed painting for many years but its enormous size meant the cost of the work was prohibitive for a small non-profit group.

However, the Stanwell grant allowed them to get the front of the building painted this year.

Apart from its many other functions, Heritage House also acts as a Visitor Information Centre for the town.
