Sue Dowideit-Reiger, left, with carollers from Kingaroy State High School

December 14, 2015

Visitors to South Burnett libraries have enjoyed a  festive bonus recently with surprise visits by a group of keen carollers.

The singers, lead by teacher Sue Dowideit-Reiger are all Kingaroy State High School students who have voluntarily given up their school holidays to help spread Christmas cheer at local libraries.

Accompanied by South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann, Deputy Mayor Keith Campbell and Cr Ros Heit, the choir visited Kingaroy Library on Monday to entertain a large group of library “regulars” called together by librarian Helen Swendson for a special catch-up.

The “regulars” were all members of one of the 10 or so special interest groups who meet at the library, including card and scrabble players, book club and family history club members, Spanish lesson students and members of the Kingaroy Computer Users Group.

After being serenaded by the students, the library users were each presented with a small Christmas gift by Cr Heit.

But they didn’t get to keep them (at least initially) …

Mrs Swendson began a game of “pass the parcel” which meant the residents had to swap parcels to the left or the right in a hilarious (and confusing) game which tested their reflexes.

The groups that meet at the library are popular with residents of all ages, and provide an opportunity for people to make new friends.

Cards players meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30am at the Kingaroy Library … some of the regulars include Belle Winters, Kingaroy; Jo Lindner, Yarraman; and Allan Adams, Kingaroy
Some of the residents learning Spanish … from left, John Martret (Kingaroy), Lynne Downes (Bunya Mountains), Anne Martret (Kingaroy), Betty Descovitch (Wondai), tutor Silvia Fletcher, Rosemary Balzer (Kingaroy), Rachel and Kate Dawson (Tarong), and Cath Richards (Kingaroy); lessons will resume in February 2016
The Book Club, which meets on the second Monday of every month at 10:00am would like to invite more people to join them … some of the members, from left, Pam Knight, Moira and Tom Reilly, and Mick Cook, all from Kingaroy

Confusion reigns as the game of “Pass the Parcel” becomes a tad complicated

Author’s Talk:

Local author Errol Bishop was the principal at Macleay Island School in Moreton Bay when he first heard about the legend of a 17th century shipwreck, known locally as the Stradbroke Island Galleon. This story inspired his book Ghost Galleon. The novel is a speculative tale about The Andorinha.

Errol will be speaking at the Kingaroy Library on Thursday, January 28, at 10:00am.

One Response to "Surprises At South Burnett Libraries"

  1. I wish to thank the South Burnett Regional Council for putting on a lovely morning tea Christmas break up at the Wondai library. A lovely surprise was the appearance of the Kingaroy High School choir singing some Christmas Carols. That really spread some Christmas cheer.

I also had an invitation to attend the Kingaroy Library Christmas break up. Again we were uplifted by the Kingaroy High School choir with more lovely Carols, led by teacher Sue Dowideit-Reiger and her beautiful voice.

A fun game of pass the parcel was played, followed by a very nice finger-food lunch.

The libraries are such community-based centres, where people can meet others in group activities such as Spanish lessons, chess, book clubs and card players, as well as relaxing with a book or adding pieces to a jigsaw puzzle in the Kingaroy library.

    Happy Christmas to everyone.
