The Burnett Mary Regional Group and David Hall Consulting will be running a workshop for South Burnett farmers on November 24 to show them how to get the best out of red cropping soils.
The workshop will take the form of a breakfast meeting, starting at 7:30am and finishing by 10:30am.
It will be held on a cropping farm in the Benair area between Kingaroy and Kumbia.
BMRG Project Officer Ann McKenzie said topics for the day will include strip tillage; soil testing; and fertiliser and product selection, as well as application.
“It should be a relaxed morning with some stimulating discussion and plenty of opportunities for questions,” Ms McKenzie said.
“Many peanut farmers in the South Burnett have adopted a strip tillage approach, which means the areas where the peanuts are grown are cultivated while the area in between rows is not.
“Strip tillage can help protect soils from erosion as well as reduce the time and fuel needed to prepare an area for cropping.
“However, it can also have a downside, with subsequent crops such as wheat being uneven.”
The field day will have a frank discussion about the benefits and risks associated with strip tillage.
Farmers will also have the opportunity to share their experiences and discuss soil management problems with agronomist David Hall.
The field day is free to attend and is supported by the Burnett Mary Regional Group through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.
