Gavin Fletcher – crowned “King of Kingaroy” at the Kings Royal in January – showed his royal touch to win the opening round of the Golden Helmet Series for Modified Sedans at Kingaroy Speedway on Saturday night.
His Falcon had the pace to lap rivals and showed Fletcher is in fine form to defend his crown at the 2016 Kings Royal which will be raced over January 22-24.
The word “speedway” used to be synonymous with “rain” in Kingaroy but for once the weather gods smiled on the South Burnett Speedway Club at the weekend.
A couple of small showers before the club’s inaugural meeting for the 2015-16 season got underway ensured the track was muddy, but not too slippery to race on.
And although lightning seemed to be all around the Kingaroy Showgrounds, the rain held off for most of the night.
In the other categories, Queensland champion Chris Pagel won the Production Sedans final, while youngster Ardie Jonic took out the Junior Sedans final. Maryborough driver Travis Hutchison was successful in the Street Stocks.
Australian champ Mark Carlin had a tough night, finishing up nose-to-nose with another competitor in the Modified Sedans B-Main after breaking a ball joint in his borrowed car.
And Mackay’s Boss family, Brodie and Jason, seemed to be trying to out-do each other with the loss of panels.
It was a better night for Kingaroy’s Barron family, with Kipp qualifying for the Junior Sedans final, Sheree in the Street Stocks final and Brett in the Modified Sedans 25-lap feature.
The next speedway meeting in Kingaroy will be held on December 5.

Daniel Johnson, from Mackay, had a massive rollover at the chequered flag in Heat 4 of the Junior Sedans. His car was a write-off but fortunately the young driver escaped unharmed.
Junior Sedans: Daniel Johnson Rollover
Daniel Johnson made it quite the spectacular finish to Heat 4 of the Jonic Motors Allstar Series last night riding a wheel to take the lead over the finish line with a big dump! Luckily walking away after going into the fence roof first!
