A 5km safety zone declared by police at a Crossdale property near Esk on Tuesday morning has been revoked following the arrest of a 30-year-old man.

The emergency began when police were called to a property on Keen Road, off Stanley Pocket Road about 8:30am.

Upon their arrival, they found a man armed with a rifle.

He was believed to be alone at the property.

Initially, a safety zone of one kilometre, declared under Public Safety Preservation Act, was put around the property but this was extended when police feared the man may be hiding in nearby bushland.

Residents living within the area were advised to remain indoors and to report anything of concern to Triple Zero.

Nearby Stanley Pocket Road was closed at the intersection with Wivenhoe-Somerset Road.

Specialist police and a Bearcat vehicle were called to the scene.

About 6:00pm, a man was taken into custody by police.

He received treatment at the scene for a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

No one else was injured during the incident.

UPDATE November 4: A 30-year-old Crossdale man has been charged with one count each of unlawful possession of a weapon, serious assault police, threatening violence by discharging a firearm, dangerous conduct with a weapon, and failure to possess a licence for ammunition.
