Former Olympic swimmer Duncan Armstrong … coming to Kingaroy

November 2, 2015

Former Olympic swimmer Duncan Armstrong will be the special guest at the next Mayor’s Charity Golf Day.

Armstrong admits he’s more used to swimming than golfing but says new challenges are “par for the course”.

The next Charity Golf Day will be held at the Kingaroy Golf Club on Friday, December 4, from 10:00am.

Nominations for the three-person Ambrose are $100 per team, which includes a barbecue lunch, prizes and trophies.  The event will begin with a shotgun start.

Nominations can be made by phoning (07) 4189-9345.

“Council is honoured that an Olympic champion like Duncan Armstrong is taking time out of his busy schedule to support the South Burnett,” Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said.

Armstrong became a household name at the age of 20 when he won the 200m freestyle at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. He went on to become the Young Australian of the Year and be honoured with an Order of Australia Medal.

He took an immediate interest in the South Burnett when he met Mayor Kratzmann and other Council staff at the recent Local Government Association of Queensland conference in Toowoomba.

When he heard the Mayor’s charity golf days were among several fundraising events which raise money for the Mayor’s Community Benefit Fund, Armstrong offered to “chip in” by participating in the next event.

“I’m looking forward to a supporting such a great cause, which provides much-needed financial help to community organisations, so they can focus on what they do what they do best,” Duncan said.

“I’m sure everyone I meet during the golf day will have their own reasons why I should spend more time in the South Burnett, and why it’s the best place to live in Australia. I look forward to it.”

He is also keen to participate in an informal Question and Answer session with golfers towards the end of proceedings.

All proceeds from the golf day will be placed in the Mayor’s Community Benefit Fund which supports South Burnett charities and not-for-profit organisations.
