The long weekend gave Murgon bowler Courtney Sippel the opportunity to test her skills in A Grade in the game against Warriors played at Lyle Vidler Oval in Kingaroy

The South Burnett Cricket season kicked off last weekend, despite it being a long weekend.

The traditional holiday break meant there were absences in regular sides.

In Kingaroy, Warriors faced last year’s A Grade champions, Murgon Crusaders, at Lyle Vidler Oval.

Murgon batted first, knocking out an impressive 263 runs, including a 157-run opening partnership between Jason Webber and Jeff Rose.

Webber top-scored for Crusaders with 84.

Best of the Warriors’ bowlers were Jim Dundas (4/58) and Matt Nesbitt (3/34).

In reply, Warriors were all out for 151. Steve Heness was the best of the batters with 68.

Crusaders’ best bowlers were Tom Patton (2/7) and Graham Brown (2/30) but special mention must be made of Courtney Sippel, a junior female bowler who usually plays B Grade, who stepped up to A Grade and tested the Warriors’ bats with her fast bowling.

Murgon notched up a 112 run victory.

The other A Grade game was played in Wondai between the Wolves and the Nanango Scorpions.

It was relocated to the Wondai soccer fields as the Nanango playing fields were not available.

Nanango batted first and finished 8/96.

Dean Olzard was the top scorer, with 39 not out.  Opener Brendan Weil was next best with 25.

Best of Wondai bowlers were Will Mewburn with 3/11 off 6.3 overs and Clayton Graham with 2/16 off four overs.

In reply, captain and opener Geoff Wallis led the way for the Wolves with an unbeaten 66 – including 11 boundaries.

Mewburn added a handy 21 to the score.

Wondai overtook the Nanango total with eight wickets still in hand, finishing 3/102.

Best of the Nanango bowlers was Dean Olzard with 1/18 off six overs.

In B Grade, Kumbia took on RSL Services at Kumbia but it wasn’t a happy start to the season for the home fans with the Kingaroy team winning by seven wickets.

Best of the Kumbia batsmen were Chris Medcalf (27) and Roger Hoare (16).

RSL Services’ best bowlers were Hack Hourn (3/28) and Matthew Forlonge (2/20).

Adam Geiger finished 27 not out for RSL Services; next  best scores were Simon Fairbairn (23) and Brian Walters (15).

Best of the Kumbia bowlers was Shane Laherty with 2/18.
