Urban and rural fire crews attended a chimney fire in a home at Haly Creek on Thursday evening.

The fire was contained to the chimney and flue of a house in Flagstone Creek Road.

Firefighters were called at 6:15pm and quickly extinguished the flames.

Earlier this year, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services North Coast Region Assistant Commissioner John Bolger relayed some safety tips for residents with fireplaces or chimneys:

  • Thoroughly clean the chimney before lighting up after a break
  • Avoid using an accelerant and, if possible, use only seasoned hardwood and dry timber
  • Never leave a fireplace unattended and have a guard or screen in place to prevent burning embers from floating into the surrounding area.
  • Never leave children or pets unsupervised near an open fire or slow combustion heater
  • Never place hot ashes in household bins or council bins
  • Have a metal bucket which you use only for ash
