UPDATE 5:30pm – The highway re-opened to traffic at 5:00pm.

The Brisbane Valley Highway was closed for almost nine hours in both directions near Harlin after a fatal collision on Tuesday morning.

Police put in place diversions for light traffic but advised heavy vehicles to use an alternative route.

Long delays were reported to be occurring in the region.

Initial police investigations indicate an empty cattle truck and a utility collided about 7:50am, two kilometres south of Harlin.

The driver of the utility died at the scene.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
