A large house fire at Esk on Thursday afternoon has caused delays on the Brisbane Valley Highway.

At 5:30pm, police said the highway was closed in both directions.

Emergency services were working to put diversions in place.

The highway is expected to be closed for several hours.

Firefighters could not save the building which was well alight when they arrived just after 4:00pm.

Ambulance paramedics have treated one person at the scene for smoke inhalation, but it is believed there was no one at home when the fire broke out.

Initial reports on Twitter suggested explosions were heard in the building.
