Nanango State High School’s winning Senior team … Ema Nunn, Darcy Beresford and Dakota Jones (Year 11)

August 10, 2015

Kingaroy’s Apex Club isn’t meeting any more but that hasn’t stopped a revival this year of its popular high school debating competition.

A group of “old” Apexians organised a series of debates for local high school students over recent weeks.

The finals were held at Kingaroy State High School last Thursday night.

A team from Nanango State High School won the Senior Debate, successfully arguing “That feminism is irrelevant to young women today”.

In the junior competition, Kingaroy State High School Team 2 won, arguing “That all secondary schools should have adventure playgrounds”.

The two winning teams will now head off to Gympie on August 23 to compete in the Apex Area Finals.

At Gympie, the Juniors will be affirming “That Australian tourists should boycott Bali” while Seniors will be opposing “That we should ban organic farming practices”.

The winning teams from these debates will then compete at the State Final which will be held on Sunday, September 6, at a venue to be announced.

Runners-up in the Senior competition were Melanie Hanwright, Jessica Blanch and Adelaide Hockenhull (Year 12 at Kingaroy State High School)
Kingaroy Team 2 won the Junior competition … Oscar Schmidt, Beth Wright, Regan Goulter (Year 9)
Kingaroy Team 1 were runners-up in the Junior debate … Rachel Miron, Graham Towells and Dayna Pukallus (Year 10)
The judges for the Kingaroy debates … Apex Life Member Bill Paterson, retired Apexian and Chief Adjudicator Kendall Siddans and Apex Life Member John Box

  1. Great article and support for local events as always. Meant to mention there were two other past Kingaroy Apexians who adjudicated debates during the competition. Brian Tessmann and Peter McLennan who are ‘Senior Active’ members of the club.
