Cattle gallstones ... could be worth a small fortune

Police acted quickly when they received a complaint that a gallstones were being stolen from cattle slaughtered at a Toowoomba abattoir.

They executed a search warrant on a Toowoomba address and recovered the stones, which they will allege were being stolen over a period of at least six months.

A 38-year-old man has been issued with a notice to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court charged with theft.

But why would anyone steal cattle gallstones?

They are used extensively in oriental medicine, particularly in the treatment of hepatitis and other liver and gallbladder related ailments.

Police say quality gallstones may reach values of about $20,000 per kilogram …
