The Blackbutt War Memorial on the D’Aguilar Highway was the focal point of the town’s Anzac Day commemorations this year

May 3, 2015

Like many other South Burnett towns, Blackbutt held two commemorations on Anzac Day.

The first – a Dawn Service – got underway at the Coulson Street War Memorial at 4:27am and entailed temporarily blocking the D’Aguilar Highway.

The service attracted an above-average crowd because of the centenary of the Gallipoli landings.

Afterwards, many of the participants went back for a traditional Gunfire Breakfast at the RSL’s premises in Douglas Street.

Later in the morning, a procession formed outside the RSL and proceeded along Coulson Street to the War Memorial for a Commemoration Service, which required the highway to be blocked a second time for a short period.

This year’s parade was led by serving members of all three arms of the armed forces and enlivened by several military vehicles and members of the Emu Gully Field Volunteers, a military history group from Helidon, who turned out in WWI uniforms.
