Competitors patiently wait their turn at this year's Kumbia Charity Campdraft; an unexpected two-week postponement because of weather had little effect on numbers
Greg Kittel prepares to contest the final round of this year's Maiden Novice

April 23, 2015

The two-week postponement of this year’s Kumbia Charity Campdraft appeared to have little impact on competitor numbers when the event was finally run at the Kumbia Showgrounds last weekend.

The popular campdraft, which had to be trimmed in 2013 because of the floods, then cancelled entirely in 2014 due to drought, had originally been scheduled to run over the Easter weekend.

But it had to be deferred at the last minute because of forecast rain.

Organisers were disappointed, but persistent, and quickly selected April 18-19 as the next available date in this year’s busy Queensland campdrafting calendar.

As previously planned, the event featured the Alex Logan Memorial Open Draft, a Restricted Sweepstakes (for Open and Novice horses only), a Combined Maiden / Novice Draft, the Frank Tucker Memorial Junior Draft (for riders 8 years and under) and the Stanwell Juvenile Draft (riders 13 to under 17 years).

A pig-on-the-spit dinner catered by the Kumbia Cricket Club was available for competitors on Saturday night, and many also took advantage of free camping in the grounds to make a full weekend of it.

As things turned out, the revised date enjoyed fine weather and sprightly, in-form cattle kept competitors on their toes.

Kumbia and District Charity Campdraft president Malcolm Ryan said he was very happy with the weekend, and hoped the group might be able to run a second, one day campdraft at the recently improved campdrafting grounds each year as well.

Kumbia’s Senior Constable Adam Entwistle, who also paid a visit over the weekend to get his first-ever taste of campdrafting, said he was very impressed with the skill of the riders and the good behaviour of the crowd.
