Cr Barry Green has put out a call for South Burnett residents to nominate local sports people who have competed at a national or international level.

Nominations can come from anywhere between Benarkin and Goomeri – including Cherbourg and Yarraman – and be for any sport, from rugby league to wood chopping..

The names will be entered on a “Wall Of Fame” that will be erected at the Nanango Visitor Information Centre to permanently honour the region’s sporting heroes.

“Over the last 100-odd years the South Burnett has produced an amazing number of first class sportspeople in all fields,” Cr Green said.

“We’re all familiar with greats like Roy Emerson, Carl Rackemann and Matthew Hayden.

“But how about Justin Anlezark from Yarraman, who won gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games for shot-put?

“Or Geoff Dymock, from Goomeri, who took five wickets in the second innings against New Zealand in Adelaide on his debut in 1974?”

“Or Jeff Dynevor, from Cherbourg, who represented Australia at the 1964 Empire Games.”

Cr Green said he wants to create a “Wall Of Fame” for the region’s sporting superstars because there is no permanent memorial to them anywhere in the South Burnett at the moment.

He hopes it will become a tourist attraction.

But even if it doesn’t, it believes it will be a long-overdue tribute to our region’s very best sports people.

“This is a memorial to the South Burnett’s sportsmen and women, and by this I mean the geographic South Burnett, not just the Council’s area,” Cr Green said.

“Which means that Yarraman, Cherbourg and Goomeri are all part of this too, because they’re all just as much as part of the South Burnett as the rest of us are.”

The Wall can house up to 200 names, and Cr Green said today he already has 64 nominations.

You can make one of your own by phoning him on 0417-767-444 or by emailing him.
