Kingaroy’s greens have been busy this past week as the club makes an impression on its championship calendar.

Their Open Pairs competition is one event that’s already done and dusted.

It was played over two days last Saturday and Sunday.

The competition was run in a knockout format and played over 21 ends.

Six teams had to contest an elimination round to enter the quarter-finals. Here’s how things played out:

Round One:

  • Dave Barwick and Kev Raffin def. Lester Newman and Trevor Turner 27-18
  • Malcolm MacLeod and Glen Turner def. John Lacey and Ray Maclaren 24-11
  • Eric Ford and Alan Irwin 21 def. Dave Clapperton and John Coppard 21-14

Quarter Finals:

  • Errol Dionysius and Danny Holligan def. Troy Schultz and Greg Schulz 29-25
  • Harry Read and Geoff Clutterbuck def. Paul Marychurch and Bob Robinson 18-12
  • Paul Geritz and Richie Patterson def. Dave Barwick and Kev Raffin 29-15
  • Malcolm MacLeod and Glen Turner def. Eric Ford and Alan Irwin 30-10

Semi-Finals:

  • Paul Geritz and Richie Patterson def Harry Read and Geoff Clutterbuck 25-17
  • Errol Dionysius and Danny Holligan 28 def. Malcolm MacLeod and Glen Turner 28-14

The two in-form teams of the championship – Errol Dionysius and Danny Holligan, and Paul Geritz and Richie Patterson – met in the final.

Geritz and Patterson jumped away to a quick start, and after 6 ends led by 8 shots to 4.

They maintained their lead until the 12th end where the scoreboard changed: a four gave Dionysius and Holligan a one shot lead, 12 to 11.

The next four ends saw the dynamic duo dominate and extend their lead 27 to 11.

And steady play after that saw them run out comfortable winners 31 to 16

Last Sunday the popular Triples competition catered for those not in the championships:

  • Fred Keding, Gladys Slatter and Col Kratzmann def. Col McBride, Val Jeppesen and Ray Maclaren 22-15
  • Marj Moore, Geoff Clutterbuck and John Coppard 27 def. Des Richards, Maureen Semgreen and Beryl Woods 27-11

And on Cheap Tuesday, the match of interest was between Maree Millard, Geoff Clutterbuck and Dave Barwick who defeated Alex Callender, Erris Vale and Bob Robinson 16-10.

Wenesday was a big day, with thirty two players on the green for Sue’s Trophy Day – a farewell to long-time employee Sue Eggleton, who is leaving for greener pastures in Oakey.

Sue generously donated trophies for the day’s bowls, and a pleasant day was had by all.

Tributes and well wishes for Sue were numerous throughout the day, too.

The winners were Peter Taylor, Marj Moore, Col Kratzmann and Diane Reed.

Results:

  • Peter Taylor, Marj Moore, Col Kratzmann and Diane Reed def. Des Richards, Barry O’Brien, Alan Rogerson and Maureen Semgreen 23-10
  • Bess Thorp, Bob Bougoure, John Coppard and Sharon Yeates def. Keith Muller, Norma Rook, Alan Irwin and Val Crawford 23-16

  • Evelyn Taylor, Wayne Thatcher, Glen Yeates and Maureen Kemp def. Fred Keding, Lindy Clutterbuck, Richie Patterson and Val Jeppesen 23-22

On Thursday, in Triples, twenty four players took to the greens to participate in the competition.

The weather conditions were ideal and the green was running at a slick pace, however most players quickly adapted and good bowls were played.

Results:

  • Bevan Askew, Barry O’Brien and Col Kratzmann def. John Lacey, Harry Read and Danny Holligan 17-13
  • Henry Harwood, Felipe Munoz and Dave Clapperton def. Merv Anderson, Erris Vale and Ray Maclaren 29-13

Yarraman News

Both the Ladies’ and the Men’s clubs are moving quietly along on their Championship calendar.

On Wednesday, the Ladies played two A Singles quarter-finals games:

  • Kay Dugdell scored a comfortable win over Sandra Currell 25-12
  • Glenda Wolski defeated Eunice Smith 25-17

The Men’s club held the first of their semi-finals on Friday afternoon, and there were quite a few in the gallery for this one.

Bill Holmes played Merv Fitch, and Bill got away to a good start, leading 9-3 after eight ends.

With his confidence up, he then kept the pressure on Merv for the rest of the match and ran out a comfortable winner 26-18.

The other semi-final (between Graham Heaton and Kevin Profke) is yet to be played.

The introduction of a Scroungers competition is proving popular.

Two rinks played on Friday and some good scores were registered.

Robyn Diercke took out the title of “Chief Scrounger” with 70 points. Next best was David Douglass with 50 points.

My column is a little late this week because I’m off for a week’s break in New Zealand.

Why? Because I have an urge to see how the other half live across the ditch.

However I’ll be back next week and I solemnly promise – no holiday snaps.

Happy bowls!
