Kumbia farmer Peter Howlett and BGA AgriServices agronomist Ian Crosthwaite feature in a new video which expounds the benefits of strip tillage.

Strip tillage is a farming system that combines the benefits of zero till and conventional tillage, ie only the row that will be planted is ripped.

Peter says strip tillage – and controlled traffic farming – has allowed him to increase yields on his mixed cropping farm.

He can now rip and fertilise at depth along the seed planting rows but leave the rest of his paddock untouched.

This helps him to retain soil moisture, lessen soil compaction and also helps to control erosion.

Peter is one of the growers taking part in the Australian Peanut Genetic Improvement Program, partially funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) which released the video.
