Two free seminars will be held in Kingaroy later this month for people with lymphoedema or their carers.

Lymphoedema is the accumulation of excessive amounts of fluid, resulting in swelling of one or more parts of the body due to a failure of the lymphatic system.

The condition usually affects arms or legs, although it can also involve the trunk, breasts, head and neck or genital area.

Women who have undergone surgery and radiotherapy for treatment of breast cancer are particularly susceptible to lymphoedema of the arm.

The condition can occur in the legs or groin after surgery and radiotherapy for prostate, bowel or testicular or ovarian cancer.

Treatment includes massage, compression bandages, exercises, medication and surgery.

The seminar will explain the difference between primary and secondary lymphoedema, the importance of walking and other exercise, manual lymphatic drainage, skin care, and using compression and support garments.

The seminars will be held from 1:30pm to 4:30pm, or 6:30pm to 9:00pm, on April 30 at the Kingaroy RSL Club.

They have been organised by the Lymphoedema and Obesity Support Associati0n of Australia, which is based in Monto.

For catering purposes, attendees have been asked to register with either Penny Stockwell on 0402-204-611 or Pauline Wallace on 0408-704-088.
