Police will be keeping a close eye on South Burnett motorists over Easter … all thanks to last year’s Brisbane G20 summit.
A pair of the latest Yamaha police bikes, fresh from G20 duties, are now patrolling local roads.
As well as LIDAR speed guns, the units are also equipped with the latest video technology and one also has mobile radar (just like Highway Patrol cars).
Senior Constable Chris Watson and Senior Constable Greg McMaster, from the Gympie Road Policing Unit, have been working hard over the past few days – as a few local motorists could attest.
They’ve been concentrating on the “Fatal Five”, which are still the main causes of road crashes in Queensland:
1. Speeding
2. Drink and drug driving
3. Failure to wear a seatbelt
4. Driving while fatigued
5. Distraction and inattention (eg. mobile phones, complex sound systems, on-board DVD players and satellite navigation)
The motorbike technology may have changed over the years, but the job of the police riders is still the same: to save lives by encouraging motorists to drive safely.
