The result of the Gympie Regional Council mayoral by-election is still too close to call.

The by-election was called after long-serving former Mayor Ron Dyne resigned on December 10 due to ill health.

Current councillors Ian Petersen and Mick Curran still lead the poll but are just 101 votes apart.

As the vote was conducted wholly by post, valid ballots could still arrive for counting up to the close of business today.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland now must count these last ballots and then distribute preferences before a result can be declared – possibly on Wednesday afternoon or Thursday.

Results as at 8:00pm:

  • Reg Lawler – 1806
  • Doug Anderson – 771
  • Gay Lohse – 2588
  • Ian Petersen – 6995
  • Mick Curran – 7096
  • George Groth – 904
  • Lindsay Horswood – 574
  • Graham Engeman – 3553
