The by-election for a new Mayor for the Gympie Regional Council is turning into a cliff-hanger with current Gympie councillors Ian Petersen and Mick Curran battling for the top spot.

The official “election day” was Saturday but as the vote was carried out by mail, postal votes can still be counted up until the close of business on February 17.

Cr Petersen represents Division 3 and Cr Curran Division 7.

A decision is not expected until next week, after preferences have been distributed.

At 1:00pm on Tuesday, with 22,011 votes counted the count stood at (in ballot order):

  • Reg Lawler 1618
  • Doug Anderson 671
  • Gay Lohse 2261
  • Ian Petersen 6246
  • Mick Curran 6321
  • George Groth 810
  • Lindsay Horswood 521
  • Graham Engeman 3212

Gympie Regional Council also has to appoint a replacement for Cr Tony Perrett who was elected as the LNP MP for Gympie at the recent State election.
