The former Kingaroy Shire Council works depot site in Pound Street was officially removed from the State Contaminated Land Register on December 23.
“This is a significant milestone for the South Burnett Regional Council as the first steps in the decontamination process began before 2007, back in the days of the then Kingaroy Shire Council,” South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said.
The process took so long because of many activities which had been carried out on the site over the years.
Natural Resources Portfolio holder Cr Kathy Duff said the length of time was also related to Council implementing more “cost-effective remediation solutions” which required longer timeframes than shorter but more expensive alternatives.
The site is now considered a “clean” site with no restrictions on its development or future uses.
