A special Christmas Carnival has been organised at Windera this year to help raise the spirits of the drought-stricken families in the area.
“It’s really, really getting hard for some families, especially leading into Christmas,” organiser Sarah Vanderkolk said.
“I wanted to do something and then on Wednesday last week I woke up with this idea.”
Sarah knew she couldn’t organise a Christmas carnival by herself so she approached her friends Renae and Aaron Waldock.
Aaron, who is president of Murgon Apex, invited Sarah to speak at their next meeting … and the club quickly came on board.
The Barambah Soccer Club is also supporting the day, and the Maryborough Apex Club will be bringing down a miniature train and a jumping castle.
Sarah said the aim was to make it a great family afternoon, where whole families could “takes their minds off things” for a couple of hours and mums and dads could get together and have a chat.
Renae said the drought was biting hard around Windera.
“They just can’t afford to go to the Christmas Fairs in town,” she said.
The free Bush Kids Christmas Carnival – the first ever held in Windera – will get underway from 2:30pm on December 20 at the Windera State School oval.
As well as the mini-train and jumping castles, there’ll be Red Dust miniature horses and Karla’s Carnival will have face-painting, games and activities.
Santa Claus will drop by at 4:30pm and there will be a free barbecue dinner from 5:30pm.
