Firefighters were called to extinguish a fire in a peanut shell dump near Knight and Hodge streets in Kingaroy about 11:00am on Sunday.

Bruce Groer, from Kingaroy Station, said it wasn’t unusual for spontaneous combustion to occur in a pile of shell, particularly after rain.

Two urban fire crews quickly extinguished the main flames but PCA employees will now have to cover the shell with dirt and clay to oxygen-starve any smouldering shell deep in the dump.
