The South Burnett Regional Council has warned residents that taking water from fire hydrants can result in heavy penalties.

Accessing water from fire hydrants is only permitted by authorised Queensland Fire and Emergency Services personnel or Council staff.

“If it is found that an unauthorised take of town water has occurred, Council can take action under the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008 which can carry a penalty of up to 1000 Penalty Units (currently one Penalty Unit equals $113.85),” a Council spokesman said.

“If you notice someone accessing water from a fire hydrant that isn’t for firefighting purposes or Council preforming maintenance, please contact Council’s Water and Wastewater section by phoning (07) 4189-9100 or by email
