Firefighters work to protect a home on Kumbia-Brooklands Road this morning

November 12, 2014

Multiple fire crews were scrambled this morning to protect homes at Ellesmere after a large grass fire broke out in Gannon Drive about 10:30am.

Urban, rural and units from the visiting Strike Team were called to the scene.

The fire quickly spread across a shallow valley linking Gannon Drive with the Kumbia-Brooklands Road, near the intersection with Ellesmere Road.

A number of homes were in the pathway of the flames, but fire crews successfully defended these and also stopped the blaze from crossing Kumbia-Brooklands Road.

Flames came within metres of one house which was surrounded by firefighters.

About 50ha of grassland and backyards were burned out.

At 1:30pm, crews were still on the scene ensuring the fire was not whipped up again by the wind.

Meanwhile, at Tingoora multiple rural fire crews and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service employees are on the scene of a fire burning in bushland near Olsens Road.

A QFES spokesman said this fire had been burning for some time and had been under control but broke through containment lines about 9:00am today.

At 1:30pm, fire crews were still on scene working to contain the blaze. No properties were under threat but there was a large amount of smoke in the area.
