Wondai’s Cameron Donohue is out LBW to Wayne Kelly for 22 in the A Grade match played at Wondai

Kingaroy RSL Services started their 2014-15 A Grade cricket campaign on a strong note on Saturday, downing Wondai by 23 runs.

RSL Services batted first and knocked out 274 for the loss of just six wickets.

Peter Horne top-scored with 63 n.o. while Mark Schmidt added 53 valuable runs.

Kiall Rowberry did the damage for the home team, taking 3/47.

In reply, Will Mewburn put in a dogged effort scoring a century for the Wolves.

Mewburn finished with 117 while Evan O’Rourke added 51, but it was to no avail with Wondai running out of overs.

Oops … Nanango’s Brendan Weil goes within centimetres of being bowled in the A Grade game against Warriors at Lyle Vidler

Best of the RSL Services’ bowlers was Peter Horne who finished with 2/50.

In the other A Grade match played on Saturday, Warriors took on Nanango at Lyle Vidler Oval in Kingaroy. 

The home team were all out for 161, with Nanango falling short with 147.

Best with the bat for Warriors was James Maxwell, with 26.

The Scorpions’ Dean Olzard took 4/23.

Olzard also starred with the bat, knocking out a half-century.

Warriors’ Luke Smith ripped through the Nanango line-up, taking 5/37, including a hat-trick.

Don’t forget the Qld Bulls Masters will be taking on Lynda’s XI (a South Burnett invitational side) at Lyle Vidler Oval in Kingaroy on Sunday.

The Bulls Masters team will include Michael Kasprowicz, Ken Healy, Andy Bichel, Dirk Tazelaar, Ashley Noffke and Geoff Foley.

Play will get underway at noon.

Entry is by gold coin donation.

South Burnett’s young cricketers starred in their rep games played at Murgon on Sunday:

In U12s, South Burnett 8/301 beat Gympie 9/111 in a high-scoring match.

Matt Springate starred with the bat, scoring 70 (ret) just ahead of Jaden Heness (62 ret).

Fletcher Brown (48 n.o.) and Lachlan Montgomery (32 n.o.) also made good stands.

The SB bowlers also did well, with Brooke Heness taking 3/7 off five overs and Glen Fisher 3/10, again off five overs.

In U13s, South Burnett took the points by default after a forfeit by Gympie.

In U14s, South Burnett (all out 140) defeated Gympie 119. Tom Carney top scored with Lleyton Brown on 64 and BJ Fisher bowled 3/13 off 6 overs. Brown also took 2/17 off 8 overs.

Making a clean sweep of it, in U16s, SB (all out 174) beat Gympie 9/149. Jared Sippel made 68 with the bat and bowled 1/9 off 10 overs, Tyler Heness took 2/18 off seven overs.

The final of the B Grade T20 competition was played under lights at Murgon Showground on Saturday night.

After a hectic round of games on Friday night and earlier in the day, RSL Services faced the Kumbia Rattlers.

Kumbia were dominant, bowling RSL Services out for 72.  Mark McCarthy took 3/14 off just four overs.

Louise Fairbairn (20) and Karl Freeman (16) were Services’ top scorers.

In reply, RSL Services could only claim one scalp.

Kumbia quickly reached the target, finishing 1/73 off just 12 overs.

Ryan Kelly (37 n.o.) and Alex Firman (27 n.o.) were the top scorers.

Matt Patroni took RSL Services’ sole wicket, finishing  1/18 off two overs.

The draws for the A Grade and B Grade South Burnett competitions were released this week (see below).

All matches will be one-day 45-over games.

In A Grade games this weekend:

The first round of the B Grade competition will be played this weekend:

  • Warriors v RSL Services
  • Kumbia v Murgon Diggers
  • Barambah v Murgon Colts
