Cr Barry Green with Bridget Madigan who’s heading off next week to the UK

Nanango futsal player Bridget Madigan, 14, will be playing for Australia when she jets off to the United Kingdom next week.

Bridget, who is in Year 9 at Fairholme College in Toowoomba, has been selected in the Australian Futsal Association’s U14 girls side for the 21-day UK tour.

She’s been playing futsal for almost two years in her school team.

South Burnett Regional Council is helping Bridget make her sporting dream come true by providing assistance through an Elite Performance Assistance Grant.

South Burnett residents can apply for an Elite Performance grant if they have been selected for national or international events.

Applications must be accompanied by verification of selection from the relevant State or National organisation.

Bridget can’t believe she will be representing Australia in the green and gold.

“I’ve never been overseas before. It will be good to see other countries,” she said.

Her tour will take in games in England, Scotland and Wales.

Cr Barry Green, who has responsibility for Council’s sports portfolio, said the last Nanango sportsperson to be successful in an Elite Performance grant was motorcycle racer Lachlan Kavney who is now competing internationally.

Bridget will be accompanied on her trip by her mother Margie Lee-Madigan.

The pair dropped into the Nanango Visitor Information Centre earlier this week to buy some souvenirs to take with them to distribute overseas.
