The damaged steam turbine unit at Tarong North Power Station is expected to come back into service in either late September or early October after temporary repairs.

A Stanwell spokesman said today the unit would then operate at a lower capacity until a new rotor and new turbine components were installed at the next scheduled major overhaul.

It would take about 18 months for these parts to be delivered.

The Tarong North unit developed a “shudder” on May 29, ie  short-term increases in bearing vibration.

The unit was taken out of service on June 16 and a detailed inspection found damage to the rotor and turbine components.

The damaged components have now been sent to Maitland in NSW for repairs before being reinstalled.

The unit has a maximum output of 443MW but will return to service with a reduced maximum capacity of about 380MW.

The spokesman said the successful return of Unit 4 at Tarong Power Station on July 23 had compensated for the temporary suspension of Tarong North from service.
