South Burnett schools have been busy celebrating Book Week with lots of special events all designed to help youngsters “connect” with books.
The theme for the 2014 Book Week is “Reading To Connect” which is all about celebrating the bonds with other people that reading can forge.
At Kingaroy State School, teacher / librarian Julie Boyle organised a pyjamas night where the young students and their parents packed into the library to share readings of some of the 2014 Books of the Year, including “Silver Buttons” by Bob Graham.
The youngsters also had the opportunity to enjoy a hot milo and biscuits in between the readings.
Over at St Mary’s Catholic College, the students were also getting into books with a special Campfire Stories night (everyone was in their pyjamas there, too).
This is usually held outdoors but because of the weather was shifted into the Maryknoll Centre.
Students also enjoyed a variety of lunchtime activities during the week and took part in a “Nerdy Birdy” competition in the school library.
Prep to Year 6 students and staff also came dressed as their favourite book characters for the annual Book Week parade. Among the dress-ups were cowboys and cowgirls, Marvel characters, Darth Vader, Huckleberry Finn and a very scary scarecrow. The audience was kept entertained by Snow White and her dwarves who ran the assembly.
